Elmyna Bouchard conceives her engravings for the whimsical eye ready to find its way through the deconstructed symbols it perceives. Her representations are made from fragments of recognizable objects of our visual culture, creating a playful yet troubling poetry of everyday life. Bouchard’s simplified and spontaneous universe is rich in imagery and interpretation. Reality and fiction, rationality and absurdity merge in infinite possibilities of play where the artist as well as the audience can imagine a thousand stories to tell.
Lately, Elmyna Bouchard has worked on a new body of work, using a small stamp she creates, a simple process that allows her to make very light modulations ranging from the rhythm of execution to the amount of ink she chooses to put onto the stamp. The multiplication of the motif modifies its nature in such a way that the viewer can hardly identify it, therefore creating large monochromatic abstractions featuring holes in which all our certainties could be swallowed. The repetitive gesture has always been key to Elmyna Bouchard’s work, a means to explore the everyday poetry, the falsely spontaneous gesture and the question of intimacy.
Elmyna Bouchard has been living and working in Montreal since 1991. She has received several awards, notably from the Concours d’estampes Loto-Québec in 2000 and the 8th Great Canadien Printmaking Competition in 2002. In 2003, she was awarded the Prix de la Fondation Monique et Robert Parizeau by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Her work has been exhibited numerous times in Quebec and Canada, as well as outside of the country in France (Paris, Lyon, St-Malo), Japan (Tokyo), Italy (Cremona) and Australia (Brisbane). Elmyna Bouchard is part of many corporate and public collections, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto-Québec, Alcan, Hydro-Québec, the Cirque du Soleil, Bibliothèque et archives nationales du Québec, Bank of Montreal and National Bank of Canada.
